The rounding rule to come into effect in 2025
Starting from 1 January 2025, a rule for rounding the final price of the shopping cart will come into effect in all Estonian points of sale, according to which the final price of a purchase made in cash must be rounded to the nearest 5 cents.
This means that if the customer pays in cash, the final price of the shopping cart is mathematically rounded to the nearest 5 cents. 1 and 2 cent coins are no longer given back as change. A purchase amount ending in one, two, six or seven euro cents will be rounded down, and an amount ending in three, four, eight or nine euro cents will be rounded up.
The rounding will not affect the validity of 1 and 2 cent coins. If the buyer wants to pay using them, the store will accept them and there are no plans to change that. However, only 5 cent or larger coins will be given back as change starting from the new year. Rounding is only applied when paying in cash and the total amount of the shopping cart is rounded, not the price of each product or service separately. Nothing will change when paying with a card. The payment method is always chosen by the buyer and the merchant has no right to exclude one or the other payment method. Electronic payments are made in online stores and prices are not rounded.
